Genevieve Boshoff

Profile and Experience-Scientific and Technical

Genevieve Boshoff hails from South Africa where she obtained a PhD in Environmental Biotechnology. While there she spent a number of years working closely with different industries to develop biological processes (using both microalgae and bacteria) for the treatment of their waste streams. A combination of laboratory and site trials enabled Genevieve to develop a number of innovative techniques for the treatment of sulphate and heavy metal contaminated waste streams arising from sites ranging from gold mines and tanneries to soda ash production facilities and salt works.

Genevieve then returned to the academic arena when she accepted a postdoctoral position at Queens University Belfast. Whilst working on the development of nutrient delivery systems for groundwater remediation, she was offered and took the position of Environment Agency Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) with the remit of developing and promoting the use of PRBs and other in-situ remediation technologies in the UK. She sat on the steering committee responsible for the drafting of the Environment Agency Guidance on the use of PRBs for the treatment of contaminated groundwater, and was actively involved in training Environment Agency staff on the use of this technology, organising international workshops on PRBs and reactive zones and developing research on these topics. In addition, she was part-time lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering, lecturing in contaminated land, waste management and environmental biotechnology.

Seeking more direct involvement in contaminated land challenges, Genevieve moved into environmental consultancy where she was responsible for a range of site investigations, human health and groundwater risk assessments, including the investigation of one of the first Part IIA residential sites in England, where she contributed substantially to the human health risk assessment and regulatory negotiations, and further developed her interests in contaminant toxicology and risk assessment methodologies. Genevieve was also able to use her skills on a range of remediation projects including a project in Northern Ireland which was put forward for a CEEQUAL (Civil Engineering Environmental Quality) Whole Project Award due to the sustainable approaches used during redevelopment.

Genevieve then joined Terrsula, the UK licensee for reactive iron based PRBs and funnel-and-gate PRBs, as Technical Manager where for the next couple of years she was responsible for the technical design of PRBs, and in-situ and ex-situ remedial schemes for treating contaminated groundwater and soil using the Adventus range of products.

Genevieve’s diverse experience culminated in her current position in Sirius Strategic Environmental Management (SSEM) where a she combines her knowledge and expertise of technology development, innovative remedial methods, site investigation and risk assessments to provide robust solutions to difficult and complex environmental problems.
